ReplyDeleteAll I ask, all that I beg the community to do is exercise a little autonomy in their choices. Don't just look at a selection and think, "Oh, he/she was nominated that year and I like him/her." Actually think about who you believe was truly your favorite, which may or may not always gel with Oscar's choices, and that's fine.
ReplyDeleteBut with all the complaining on our Under the Circuit columns about excellent unnominated performances and films, matching up 80-100% with the Academy's choices - like the 2002 ACCA - smacks of laziness. Don't blow a fun opportunity to show us the idiosyncratic online community that I know you are.
And for heaven's sake, please don't commit blatant category fraud! Just because Ethan Hawke is nominated in Best Supporting Actor for Training Day doesn't mean he "supported" a damn bit of that film...
Uh, there's a problem with the voting. You can only choose one choice and there's no write in. Plus, the supporting performances from Memento are missing!

ReplyDelete@Robert: Shrek is a sentimental choice for me. I've loved it ever since it came out. Memento was meticulously directed and sculpted by Nolan, where as Shrek was lucky to be as great as it was.

ReplyDeleteJoey, I appreciate all the work you do that goes into these ACCA nominations. But, every year there are always performances or films that people feel are glaring errors that you haven't included on the votings lists. I understand that perfection will never be achieved, and you're only one person and shouldn't be expected to achieve perfection, but what I suggest for the next year is that before you open up the voting you should post the lists you intend to use on the blog. You could leave it up for a couple days, that way people can view your lists and make suggestions of people or films that they feel should be added in the comments section before you actually open the voting. It's a much more democratic system, and I think most of us would appreciate it.

It's something to consider. Ultimately it's not my call, but especially for the older years, I can see that being a good compromise.
ReplyDeleteKeep in mind, not all suggestions would go on the poll, but if there's an overwhelming omissions, then I have no doubt we'd take note.
