Lady Gaga and Adele Top Billboard Charts - Week Ending April 2, 2011

All information contained herein courtesy of Billboard Magazine and Billboard.com:

As part of a new feature at Awards Circuit, found every Thursday on the Blog, we will summarize and take a look at the Billboard Hot 100, Billboard 200 album chart and any other facts or anecdotes we can glean from the week in charted contemporary music...

BILLBOARD HOT 100

Scoring a 6th consecutive week at #1, Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" (Streamline/KonLive/Interscope) remains her biggest charting single to date. Aiding in her stay at the top is a move to #1 on the Hot 100 Radio Airplay charts, as well as an increase in sales, largely due to the issuance of an old-fashioned CD single. Gaga's "Born This Way" became just the 20th single in music history to enter the Hot 100 at #1 and has remained there for its entire chart life.

Rising one spot to #2 is Katy Perry's remixed collaboration with Kanye West, "E.T." (Capitol). Perry is looking to score a 4th consecutive #1 hit from her Grammy-nominated "Teenage Dream" album. If she can take that last step, she will join the ranks of Janet Jackson, Rihanna, and Mariah Carey, as female artists who have reached that accomplishment.

A recurring theme each week will undoubtedly be the record-breaking chart accomplishments of the "Glee" Cast (20th Century Fox TV). They are the most charted recording act in Hot 100 history with 131 entries (yes, more than Elvis, The Beatles, and anyone else), and with debuts at #6, #16, #36, and #37 this week they have raised their overall Top 40 hit count to 41. They are only 4 more Top 40 hits away from tying Stevie Wonder for 5th place overall. Incidentially the record for most Top 40 singles in a career belongs to Elvis Presley with 104.

"Loser Like Me" (#6) and "Get It Right" (#16) are the first two original compositions from the show to chart on the Billboard survey. Finally, "Loser Like Me" gives the cast their third Top 10 hit and second highest charting single overall. "Don't Stop Believin'" debuted and peaked at #4 in June 2009, while the Darren Criss-led cover of "Teenage Dream" opened at #8 in November 2010.

The Black Eyed Peas leap 22-5 with "Just Can't Get Enough", scoring the hip/hop-pop group their 10th Top 10 hit and 7th consecutive single to reach that milestone.

Chris Brown's collaboration with Busta Rhymes & Lil' Wayne, "Look At Me Now" slides up 12-8. "Look" is the first Top 10 for Brown since 2008's "Forever", and serves as the 6th Top 10 for Busta Rhymes, his first since 2003's "I Know What You Want (Featuring Mariah Carey & The Flipmode Squad)." Lil' Wayne's role in the track lands him his 13th Top 10 single.

Jeremih lands his 2nd Top 10 single, following 2009's "Birthday Sex", with "Down On Me" up 13-10. This also nets 50 Cent his 13th Top 10 single of his career.

And I would be remiss without mentioning that Internet "sensation" Rebecca Black and her "Friday" YouTube phenomenon thing, debuted at #72 (Ark Music Factory).

BILLBOARD 200 ALBUM CHART

Adele returns for a second non-consecutive week to the apex of the album chart, clearing 98,000 units of her sophomore album, "21" (Columbia). Moving 85,000 units for a #2 opening is Rise Against and their sixth album, "Endgame" (DGC/Interscope). Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker's "debut" effort, "Give The Drummer Some" opens at #9 with approximately 28,000 units sold. The album features Barker collaborating with a Who's-Who of artists from the hip-hop, rap, and rock communities.

A new EP from teen star Miranda Cosgrove, "High Maintenance" (Columbia) opens at #34, while famed actor and bluegrass musician Steve Martin & The Steep Canyon Rangers (#43), singer/songwriter Matt Wertz (#56), and indie rockers The Dodos (#70) round out Top 100 debuts this week. After a recent performance on American Idol, Lee DeWyze, the Season 9 champion, re-enters the Top 200 chart at #96.

  2. Thanks man! You've got to at least know the Cee-Lo track, right?!? And Gaga!? Then again, I have an almost 12-year old, so these songs ring through my house on a constant basis... Come on Joey, channel your inner 12-year old!

  3. I'm being slightly silly because everyone on the site tends to know I'm more a Springsteen type of guy than pop, but I have heard one or two of these. Ironically, only Cee-Lo Green, Avril, and Adele (I have her album, I dig on mellow music). I'd rather listen to Taylor Swift, to be honest.
