Joey's DVD Picks of the Week (3/1/2011)

This week, one of the best films of 2010 comes to DVD, which combines with another very solid flick to form a potent 1-2 punch. There's not too much else out, but these two more than make up for it, trust me. Ironically, both feature this past weekend's Oscar hosts...a coincidence? I think not. Anyhow, on to the movies. For my PICK OF THE WEEK, I went with the obvious choice, which is a film that made my top 10 of 2010 list. It's:

Love & Other Drugs

I completely fell for this romantic drama, a movie that's more realistic in its depiction of sex than almost any Hollywood film I've ever seen. Director Ed Zwick crafts a funny and touching film, getting very solid work from Jake Gyllenhaal and a nomination worthy performance by Anne Hathaway (I consider her a big snub). It's a much better flick than the reviews would have led you to believe (my rave excluded, of course), so definitely give it a shot. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by what you come across.

-Also out worth a recommendation is 127 Hours. Danny Boyle's kinetic film didn't win me over quite as fully as it did most, but I do recognize the excellent performance by James Franco. For him alone, this is worth picking up. I didn't find it to be the masterpiece it was hailed as, but it's still a good film. Pick it up and enjoy!

-The other two releases this week are the mediocre action flick Faster and the campy musical drama Burlesque, which I somehow managed to miss (cue sarcasm here). Neither are lasting pieces of cinema, but I'm sure they each have their fans out there. If you're among them, now's your chance to own the film(s), so go for it!

-My Vintage pick is, in honor of this week's release of Take Me Home Tonight, another 80's nostalgia tinged film. It's Adventureland, and I absolutely adored Greg Mottola's love letter to crappy summer jobs in the 1980's. It's an incredibly underrated flick, so definitely give it a shot if you've yet to do so.

-What will you be watching on DVD this week?
