Is the George Lucas World War II film Red Tails finally coming out?

Perhaps in the somewhat near future, according to Variety:

"Red Tails," the George Lucas-produced drama about the Tuskegee Airmen that's been gestating for years, finally has a target release date -- if director Anthony Hemingway's Twitter feed is to be believed.

Replying to fellow director Matthew Cherry, Hemingway wrote Thursday: "@MatthewACherry Congratulations Matt! That's awesome. Proud of you. Keep doing your thing! BTW, Red Tails hits screens January 2012."

Lucasfilm declined to confirm the timing, saying only: "We haven't made any announcements about (the) 'Red Tails' release date yet."

Fox, which is in negotiations to distribute the pic, also had no immediate comment.

While the project has been quiet for months, Lucasfilm reps told Variety last week that post-production was coming along, days before news arrived that Terence Blanchard will score the film.

Cast for the pic about the all-black fighter group includes Terrence Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr., Nate Parker and Bryan Cranston.
