Joey's DVD Picks of the Week (4/5/2011)

This week, the DVD releases are more of a mixed bag than last week, but as usual there's still quality to be found for those in search of new purchases. To be sure, there's no Black Swan level offering in this group, but if we're being fair with ourselves here...it's the rare week that we see something that good hit shelves (there's a great week coming soon though, I promise...at least, it's great in my book). Moving on though, for my PICK OF THE WEEK I chose a flick that sadly flew mostly under the radar during the awards season last year (mainly for its lead actor). It's:

I Love You, Phillip Morris

Jim Carrey gives one of the best performances of his career as a con man in love with Ewan McGregor's title character. It's an odd little movie, and while the whole product is only good, not great, Carrey's work is definitely top notch. The entire cast does a fine job, including McGregor, but Carrey absolutely steals the show. If for no other reason than his lead performance, this is worth picking up on DVD. (Side note: It took forever to hit theaters, and thankfully the window to DVD was a lot shorter)

-Also out this week of note is Kevin Spacey's Jack Abramoff biopic Casino Jack, the long awaited sequel Tron: Legacy, the fantasy sequel The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and the needless sequel Little Fockers. I haven't seen the Narnia film, so I can't comment on that, but I found Spacey's flick to be disappointing outside of his terrific lead role, while the Tron sequel looked nice but had nothing else going for it, and the less said about the Fockers, the better. It was just dreadful. If any of these flicks do something for you, feel free to pick them up on DVD and enjoy...

-My Vintage pick this week is, in honor of the release of Meek's Cutoff, the last collaboration between Michelle Williams and Kelly Reichardt. It's Wendy and Lucy, and it features a top 5 Michelle Williams performance in a sparse and touching story of a girl and her dog. It's a quiet flick, but a very good one that I recommend to anyone who's yet to see it.

-What will you be watching on DVD this week?

  1. Again, not an awful week, but not a great one either...

  2. I guess I'm the only one who thought it was McGregor who was the standout of that film, and Carrey who utterly failed to bring his character to any believable life...

  3. Robert, I see I am not alone on this one, I thought McGregor did much better job, as well.
