Perry and Brown rule the Billboard Charts - Week Ending April 9, 2011

BIG CHART NEWS

Katy Perry has added her name to a distinct group of artists who have landed four consecutive #1 singles from an album, as her collaboration with Kanye West, "E.T.", ends Lady Gaga's impressive 6-week stay at #1 with "Born This Way" on the Billboard Hot 100.

With his eagerly anticipated debut album, "Rolling Papers", arriving this past Tuesday, on-the-rise rap star Wiz Khalifa follows his recent #1 hit, "Black And Yellow", with "Roll Up" and "No Sleep". "Roll Up" jumps 45-29 and is the official 2nd single from the album. To try and minimize leaks, Atlantic Records rush-released "No Sleep" to iTunes and digital retailers. A huge first week in sales lands "No Sleep" at #6. Although he may lose the top spot on next week's Billboard 200 album chart to Britney Spears, Khalifa is clearly becoming the rapper of the moment. Word also hit this week that he and iconic rapper Snoop Dogg would be starring in a stoner/comedy film, penciled in for a 2012 release.

Despite another controversial week, Chris Brown scores on the Billboard pop charts as "F.A.M.E. (Forgiving All My Enemies)" lands the R&B singer his first ever #1 album. An album cut featuring Justin Bieber, "Next 2 You" debuted at #26 while Brown's latest single, "Look At Me Now" featuring Busta Rhymes & Lil' Wayne pushed ahead 8-7. All in all, Brown proves that any publicity is good publicity and I'll leave my personal comments regarding his curious album title choice to myself.

More analysis after the cut!

BILLBOARD HOT 100

In the 52-year history of the Billboard Hot 100, Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" album becomes just the ninth album to achieve the milestone of delivering 4 #1 singles. Perry is the first female to accomplish this success since Mariah Carey saw the first four singles released from her 1990 debut album all climb to the top. For Kanye West, his collaboration with Perry lands him the 4th #1 single of his career, following Twista's "Slow Jamz" (featuring West and Jamie Foxx), "Gold Digger" (which also featured Foxx), and "Stronger".

Lady Gaga dips to #4 after 6 straight weeks at the top. Gaga confirmed that "Born This Way", the album, will drop on May 23 and recently released a Country Mix as a gift to her fans for the song's success.

Building on what is proving to a bit of a rebirth professionally, Jennifer Lopez finds her music comeback, "On The Floor" returning to the Top 10, up 13-10. The track, featuring rapper Pitbull, serves as the lead single for her long-awaited "Love" album and Lopez is pre-releasing tracks via iTunes "Countdown" program. A new single featuring the ubiquitous rapper Lil' Wayne dropped this week.

In this week's "Glee" update, the cast fail to chart any new singles and true to form, find last week's impressive debuts plummet or fall completely out of the Hot 100 altogether after 1 chart week. "Loser Like Me" descends from #6 to #53, while "Get It Right" tumbles from #16 to #73. This is common for the "Glee" Cast as they receive virtually no radio airplay for their music and their chart positions are almost based almost exclusively upon weekly sales.

In one more Chris Brown-related singles chart story, he appears as the featured artist on the returning T-Pain's new single "Best Love Song", which opens at #33.

Incidentally, Rebecca Black's persistent and inescapable "Friday" climbs 72-58. The much maligned pop song was all over the media this week as Stephen Colbert used his possible performance of the single on the Jimmy Fallon late-night talk show as a means to raise money for DonorsChoose.org. Colbert is slated to perform the track on Friday, April 1. Hmmm.

BILLBOARD 200 ALBUM CHART

With Chris Brown's #1 opening week (270k sold), Jennifer Hudson secured the runner-up slot.

Hudson's "I Remember Me" matches her highest chart position on the Billboard 200, with Hudson selling 165,000 copies. Hudson's last album, her 2008 self-titled debut, sold 217,000 units in its opening week.

In a robust release week, 7 new albums debuted in the Top 10. Returning rockers The Strokes saw "Angles" debut at #4. Their first album since 2006, "Angles" sold 89,000 copies and gave the band their third consecutive #4 debut.

Gospel superstar Kirk Franklin landed a #5 debut with "Hello Fear", selling 87,000 copies of his first solo album since 2007. The digital-only "Songs For Japan" benefit album moved 68,000 digital downloads to land at #6. Alternative rockers Panic! At The Disco saw third album "Vices & Virtues" sell 56,000 albums to slide in at #7. The former Bobby Valentino, now rechristened as Bobby V, saw his latest R&B release, "Fly On The Wall", move 38,000 copies to open at #9.

Elsewhere, Green Day's fifth live album, "Awesome as F**k" started at #14. Rapper Gucci Mane and power pop band Yellowcard start at numbers #18 and #19 respectively.

The highly acclaimed return of Duran Duran, "All You Need Is Now" started at #29 while the "Sucker Punch" Soundtrack debuted at #31.

Other Top 100 debuts include a remix album from pop star Ke$ha at #36, Blues rocker Joe Bonamassa at #37, reunited grunge rockers Soundgarden's "Live On I-5" opens at #47, and rap star Pharaohe Monche at #55.

A collection of Christian singer David Phelps' music starts at #67, while latin artists Gloria Trevi and Intocable land at #71 and #75, respectively. Hard rock and metal bands Protest The Hero (#81), Saliva (#86), and Born Of Osiris (#87) debuted, while folksy singer-songwriter Josh Kelley (#92) and a remix album from Christian rockers Skillet (#98) charted as well.

With all of these new releases flooding digital and traditional brick-and-mortar music stores, album sales were up 13% from the previous week, while the year-to-date sales for albums have slid another 5%.
