...via Variety:Coming off his Oscar-nominated turn in "The Kids Are All Right," Mark Ruffalo is set to play jazz pianist Joe Albany in the indie pic "Low Down."
Ruffalo will also exec produce the period film, which explores Albany's relationship with his 11-year-old daughter, Amy.
L.A.-set story will be told from the child's point of view as she watches her talented and charismatic but strung-out father interact with other eccentrics in cocktail bars and transient hotels during the late '60s' and early '70s.
Albany found early success playing with Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and Charles Mingus but struggled with heroin addiction later.
Epoch Films partner Jeff Preiss, who has a background in commercials, will make his feature directorial debut on "Low Down." Topper Lilien and Amy Albany wrote the script based on the latter's memoir of the same name. Albert Berger and Ron Yerxa produce via their Bona Fide Prods. banner along with Epoch Films' founder Mindy Goldberg ("Junebug"); Amy Albany and Carlo Martinelli will co-produce.
Production is skedded to start at the end of the year; Ruffalo is gearing up to play Bruce Banner in Marvel's "The Avengers" this summer. Thesp recently directed and produced the indie drama "Sympathy for Delicious," which Maya Entertainment will release on April 29.
Ruffalo is repped by UTA, Brillstein Entertainment Partners and attorney Keith Klevan.
