Circuit Round-Up, 08/07

* Last week saw a whole slew of new reviews: Crazy Stupid Love, The Guard, Attack the Block, Captain America: The First Avenger, Horrible Bosses, Friends with Benefits, Terri, Hobo with a Shotgun, Winnie the Pooh, Cowboys & Aliens, Of Gods and Men, Illegal, Beastly, and Rise of the Planet of the Apes!

* Joey’s DVD Pick of the Week was a tiny indie starring one of Hollywood’s most recognizable “That Guy” actors.

* Mike Ward chronicled the myriad failures leading up to the release of Cowboys & Aliens in last week’s Box Office Actuals.

* John Foote felt like a kid in a candy store with all the promising films at TIFF this year.

* I speculated on the Oscar possibilities of films like Rise of the Planet of the Apes and The Whistleblower.

* Finally, Anna Belickis wondered what happened to one of the most promising actresses of the 90’s for this week’s Women in Cinema.

Circuit Round-Up, 06/26

* Last week, Mike Ward gave less than enthusiastic reviews of both Green Lantern and Mr. Popper’s Penguins.

* Luckily, Joey Magidson had a DVD Pick of the Week that he could really get behind.

* Anna Belickis spotlights Emma Hamer-whoops, I mean Emma Stone for this week’s Women in Cinema.

* Coinciding with Green Lantern is an Under the Circuit for Peter Sarsgaard, who I still maintain gave one of the most unjustly snubbed performances of the last ten years in Shattered Glass.

* I also previewed the Weekend Openings, and gave a surprisingly accurate prediction for Cars 2.

* Finally, Joey expresses his disagreement with the recent changes to the Academy’s rules regarding Best Picture nominations. Let us know your take on the news!

Why 'The Tree of Life' was a disappointment to me...

...or at least a partial disappointment. As you all have no doubt seen by now, my review of the film went up earlier today (you can find it here if you haven't seen it yet), and I obviously do not share in the opinion of some that Terrence Malick has crafted a masterpiece. I recognize the quality elements of the work, but it never came together for me. I figured I'd use this as a place for everyone to comment once more on the film (since it's generating a lot of chatter, not just on the site, too), now that it has been out for more than just a few days and the review is up to read and comment on. Have at it!
