The 38th annual Student Academy Awards are handed out!

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences celebrated the work of 15 student filmmakers at the 38th Student Academy Awards, held Saturday night at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Julian Higgins took home the gold medal in the narrative category for her pic "Thief." Shawn Wines landed the silver medal for "High Maintenance" and Soham Mehta took home the bronze for "Fatakra."

In the animation category, Zach Hyer's "Correspondence" and Bernardo Warman and Shaofu Zhang's "Dragonboy" were feted with gold medals. Avner Geller and Stevie Lewis took the bronze for "Defective Detective."

In the foreign student film category, Hallvar Witzo was awarded the gold medal for "Tuba Atlantic." Karzan Kader was given the silver medal for the pic "Bekas" and Max Zaehle earned the bronze for "Raju."

In the docu category, Wonjung Bae took home the gold medal for "Vera Klement: Blunt Edge." The silver medal was handed to Anthony Weeks for "Imaginary Circumstances" and Theo Rigby got the bronze for "Sin Pais (Without Country)."

In the alternative category, Tal S. Shamir took home the gold medal for "The Vermeers."

Jennifer Garner, Edward Zwick and John Musker along with the Academy prexy Tom Sherak were among the presenters that handed out the awards.

• The Founders Award for Best Narrative Feature – She Monkeys (Apflickorna), directed by Lisa Aschan, written by Josefine Adolfsson and Lisa Aschan (Sweden). Winner receives $25,000 and the art award “Anna Christie Entering the Bar, 1965-1967” by Robert De Niro Sr. Sponsored by AKA Hotel Residences. The award was given by Jane Rosenthal and Robert De Niro and Larry Korman from AKA Residences.

Jury Comments: “Haunting, resonant, but never posed. Conventional shots become dangerous. With balanced storytelling that moves between danger and innocence, this film speaks of sex, adolescence, power, and ambition. It is original and authentic.”

• Best Actor in a Narrative Feature Film – Ramadhan “Shami” Bizimana as Yvan in Grey Matter (Matière Grise), directed and written by Kivu Ruhorahoza (Rwanda, Australia). Winner receives $2,500. The award was given by Rula Jebreal.

Jury Comments: “In a world shattered by genocide, this performance was so pure.”

• Best Actress in a Narrative Feature Film – Carice van Houten as Ingrid Jonker in Black Butterflies, directed by Paula van der Oest, written by Greg Latter (Germany, Netherlands, South Africa). Winner receives $2,500. The award was given by Rula Jebreal.

Jury Comments: “There are a million colors in this complicated performance. We award this honor for bravery and fragility, and for showing tremendous range and strength throughout.”

• Best New Narrative Director – Park Jungbum, writer and director of Journals of Musan (Musan Il-gi) (South Korea). Winner receives $25,000, sponsored by American Express; $50,000 in post production services provided by Company 3; and the art award “Double Happiness” by Nate Lowman. The award was given by Zoe Kazan and Jessica Igoe from American Express.

Jury Comments: “This film is an extraordinary study of an outcast, one that examines a complex journey with compassion and grace. The jury was unanimous in honoring this rare film, which is both emotionally arresting and an important social document. We are proud to commend this auspicious debut from an extremely talented filmmaker.”

Bernardo Bertolucci will receive the honorary Palme d'Or at Cannes...

...according to The Hollywood Reporter:

The Festival de Cannes will award its first ever Honorary Palme d'Or to Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci at this year's Opening Ceremony on May 11, organizers said on Monday.

The fest will award a notable filmmaker whose work has somehow been overlooked by the fest over the years and has never received the coveted Golden Palm prize.

Woody Allen received the distinction in 2002 and Clint Eastwood in 2009, but the prize will now be an official Festival de Cannes Opening Ceremony tradition.

The filmmaker - who was recently honored in New York for a retrospective of his work at the Museum of Modern Art - is famed for titles including 1964's Prima della Revoluzione, 1976 film Novecento, 1970 pic The Conformist and 1987 title The Last Emperor.

Darren Aronofsky will receive the Filmmaker on the Edge Award!

From The Hollywood Reporter:

Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky will be honored at the Provincetown International Film Festival, where he is slated to receive the fest's 2011 Filmmaker on the Edge Award.

Actress Vera Farmiga will also be feted with the fest's Excellence in Acting Award.

"We are thrilled with these two award recipients. They each represent the spirit and artistic voice of what filmmaking is today," the festival's executive director Gabby Hanna said.

The festival, which takes place in and around Provincetown, Ma., and focuses on indie film, will run from June 15-19.
