Russell Crowe may play Superman's father in 'Man of Steel'

According to Variety:

Ever since he agreed to oversee the franchise reboot of Superman, Christopher Nolan had been seeking a star for the role of Jor-El, Superman's biological father.
Nolan now has his man: Russell Crowe.

Crowe is in negotiations for the key role in "Man of Steel," which has Zack Snyder on board to direct for Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures. Brit thesp Henry Cavill is set to play Superman. Warner Bros. declined to comment on the talks with Crowe.

Amy Adams, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane and Michael Shannon are already set for the pic. David Goyer penned the script and developed the story with Nolan, who has kept plot details under wraps, as usual.

Charles Roven will produce along with Emma Thomas, Nolan and Deborah Snyder. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips will exec produce for Legendary.

With production set to start next month, Jor-El was one of the last roles to cast, though they also are looking for a name to play Superman's biological mother.

Marlon Brando played the part of Jor-El in Richard Donner's 1978 rendition of "Superman." Other thesps who were pursued for the "Man of Steel" role included Sean Penn and Clive Owen.

R.I.P. Jackie Cooper

Obituary from Variety:

Jackie Cooper, the first child star of the talkie era who continued acting into adulthood and also had a career as a TV director, producer and executive, has died. He was 88.

As of 2011, Cooper's Oscar nomination for Skippy was the earliest nom -- 1931 -- in any Academy Award category in which the nominee was still living. He was also the youngest nominee ever, and until 13-year-old Keisha Castle-Hughes was nominated for best actress in 2004, he was the only person to earn a Best Actor/Actress nom before his/her 18th birthday (others have been nominated in supporting categories).

Paramount's Skippy, a film now largely forgotten, was also nominated for best picture and is to date the only Best Picture nominee based upon a comic book, comic strip or graphic novel.

Cooper was a star in the early 1930s, before Shirley Temple got her start, crying often and well onscreen.

Could Superman be headed to West Africa in Man of Steel?

Possibly, according to Collider:

Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have spent recent weeks casting their Superman reboot, Man of Steel. Henry Cavill as Superman/Clark Kent. Amy Adams as Lois Lane. Michael Shannon as General Zod. Diane Lane and Kevin Costner as Martha and Jonathan Kent. The inclusion of Zod and hiring big names for Clark’s adoptive parents give some indication of where the story — conceived by David S. Goyer and producer Christopher Nolan — takes place in the Superman lore. And Lane claims Man of Steel “does cover the entire range of years, from infancy on.”

But these are just nuggets. What will the film actually be about? A new synopsis has emerged that may confirm Superman is headed to West Africa. Read more after the jump.

He will next be seen in Sony Pictures Classics', "Take Shelter," from director/writer Jeff Nichols.
Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.

-Joey's Two Cents: I'm not 100% sure I love it, but Shannon is definitely a good enough actor to pull it off...thoughts?
